Weight loss always requires a lot of effort to achieve. The most popular way of losing weight that a lot of people seem to follow nowadays is through the ketogenic diet. This high-fat, low-carb diet is considered by many to be quite effective in getting the best results in a short period of time when it comes to getting rid of excess weight. But what many may not tell you is that it can come with certain consequences in terms of how the body reacts to it. Here are some of the more common not-so-good experiences associated with following the keto diet.

Decreased Metabolism

A keto diet can lead to decreased metabolism, which happens when the body starts to burn fat for energy. One may start to feel sluggish since the body muscles are more efficient in burning calories rather than fats. Eventually it can increase as the body starts to lose muscle as a result of this.

Diarrhea

Those who follow a keto diet may experience increased bouts of diarrhea. One reason may be due to the reduced amount of fiber intake which is usually available when eating carb-rich foods such as whole grains, bread, and pasta. Another reason for this is when the gallbladder, the organ that produces bile to break down fats, becomes overwhelmed with its increased function.

Reduced Athletic Performance

While some athletes may attest to the benefits of the keto diet in terms of weight loss, they may not be aware that it may affect their athletic performance in some ways. A study among cyclists suggests that participants indicated reduced performance in high-intensity cycling and running after four days on a ketogenic diet, compared to participants who spent four days on a high-carb diet.
