Foods To Include In A Diabetes Diet

Being diagnosed with a condition like diabetes is not the end of the world. People can still live a relatively normal life by following a program to better manage blood sugar levels. This includes having to follow a diet designed for diabetics. There are different types of foods that are ideal for someone with diabetes. Here are some which can be included into the day-to-day diet.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is also an essential part of a diabetic’s diet. It is rich in soluble fiber, which is great for regulating blood sugar levels. It is also good for maintaining heart health as well.

Avocado

Avocado is a good addition to a diet for those with type-2 diabetes. It is low in simple carbohydrates but very rich in monounsaturated fats, the type that is good for the heart. Avocados are also rich in potassium, which helps the body in metabolizing glucose. A half serving of a medium avocado can provide more potassium than a banana.

Sardines And Wild Salmon

When it comes to fish, sardines and wild-caught salmon offer the best choices for diabetics. Both fishes are low in mercury but high in omega-3 fatty acids. Eating omega-3 fatty acids is associated with a lower long-term risk of type 2 diabetes. Sardines and wild salmon are also a good source of high quality protein that is low in saturated fat.

Beans and Legumes

Beans and other legumes are considered as a vegetarian’s source of complex carbohydrates, protein and soluble fiber. This food group is also rich in potassium and magnesium, essential minerals that most people with type 2 diabetes always lack. Magnesium is especially important since it helps improves the body’s ability to process insulin. Beans are quite versatile that they can be added into soups, salads, casseroles and even served as a side dish.
