It is not entirely true that diabetics should shun carbohydrates. They can still have around 40 to 45 percent of their diet composed of carbs. But the key is choosing the carbs to eat wisely. Diabetics should try to avoid simple carbohydrates and go for those found in non-starchy vegetables such as carrots, spinach, and broccoli. Good starchy high-fiber carbs to consider adding into the diet include beans, brown rice, and quinoa.

Pick proteins carefully.

Lean protein is important in a diabetic diet. But you should still choose the type of protein you consume. Choose low-fat meat and poultry for your source of protein. Protein from tofu and fish are also good alternatives. It helps preserve your body’s lean muscles that help burn glucose. Protein also helps you feel full longer, meaning that you eat less.

Consider including good fats.

There is an old belief that eating fats is not good for someone with diabetes. But that is not true anymore. Studies have revealed that not all fats are bad for you. There are good fats that are essential for a diabetic diet. The ideal amount is about 35 percent of the calorie intake daily. Good sources of fats include healthy vegetable fats such as canola and olive oil. Other good sources are fatty fish like salmon, nuts and avocadoes.

Exercise portion control in your diet.
